Through Harvard College's Program for Research in Science and Engineering (PRISE), and continuing as my senior thesis, I am researching how to secure smartphone apps using hardware-only isolation primitives. We propose that a more secure model of execution environment (EE) isolation can be provided by expanding native hardware virtualization support throughout the device. Shifting the burden of virtualization to the hardware eliminates the need for complex software management of EE isolation, reducing the trusted computing base and therefore improving security.
